Vacuum pumps are specialized pumps, used to create vacuum in certain
systems; these pumps move the gas molecules by inducing a pressure
difference. Types of Vacuum Pumps
- Transfer Pumps : Also known as kinetic pumps, these pumps impart momentum to gas by continuously transferring from the inlet of the pump to the outlet. The process involves transfer or acceleration of gas molecules with the help of rotating parts of the pump, creating a low pressure region. The process continues till all the particles are moved from the container where the vacuum is to be created. A high vacuum valve stops any exchange of gas molecules between the container and the pump.
- Trapping Pumps : Also known as capture pumps, these pumps are placed in the container being evacuated. Trapping pumps remove gas molecules by condensation or absorption on its internal surface.
